SHREVEPORT—The Centenary volleyball team kicked off the home portion of its 2008 schedule with a Summit League contest against IPFW on Friday evening. Playing in front of a raucous crowd in the Fitness Center due to Gold Dome renovations, the Ladies were pumped up in the early going but fell short as the Mastodons came away with the 3-0 (25-16, 25-15, 25-14) win.

Centenary (2-12, 0-3 Summit) grabbed the first point of the contest on an attack error by IPFW’s Ashley Dillon, but allowed the visitors to reel off the next five points. The Ladies responded with a run of their own and brought the deficit to just two points at 9-7 after kills from Erika Lunsford, Brianna Kern and Bethany Kern. IPFW (6-7, 3-0 Summit) then pushed back and tallied seven of the next nine points to put the first set away.

The Ladies enjoyed a better offensive effort in the second set accumulating 11 kills on just three errors for a .267 attack percentage. IPFW, however, proved to be more efficient on offense and hit at a .407 clip. The set started out exactly the same as the first, as Centenary fell behind 5-1, but crawled within two at 9-7 on back-to-back kills from Brianna and Bethany Kern. The Mastodons then capitalized on some hitting errors by the home team and easily pulled away to take the set.

The third set saw the Ladies take the lead briefly at 4-3 on a pair of kills from Kinsey Mims and Brianna Kern. IPFW grabbed the next four points before another Mims kill and a Centenary timeout stopped the momentum. However, the Maroon and White would get no closer than three points the rest of the way.

Bethany Kern notched her second consecutive double double and her third of the season with a team-leading 10 kills and 13 digs in the loss. Brianna Kern finished with seven kills, Kayla Tibaldo had seven digs, Jaclyn Lopez added 20 assists, and Erika Lunsford posted three total blocks.

Ashley Dillon paced IPFW with 10 kills and Jamie Schwartz anchored the defense with 13 digs.

Centenary returns to action on Sunday with a 3 p.m. Summit League match at UMKC. The Ladies will kick off a five-match home stretch next Tuesday with a 5:30 p.m. battle with Southeastern Louisiana in the Fitness Center.
