Swimming Opens Season With a Big Win

SHREVEPORT – Led by eight swimmers that finished one and two, the Centenary Ladies and Gents used domination to get a win over Delta State on Saturday afternoon.


One of the of biggest wins of the afternoon came in the 500-freestyle when junior Wlad Montoya (4:59.61) came back in the last 50 yards to win the race by nearly a second over Chris Ashton. Montoya (52.08) also got the win in the 100-yard freestyle by 35 tenths of a second.  


Sophomores Rourke Barrett (1:47.88) and Josh Pena (1:48.83) were 1 and 2 in the 200-yard freestyle and were separated by just a second. Freshmen classmates Caleb McSorley and Devin Ross also went 1 and 2 in the 50-yard freestyle, with McSorley getting the win by seven hundredths of a second.    


True freshman Peter Henry (4:27.30) and sophomore John Cefalu (4:31.31) also had a battle for first place in the 400-yard IM. However, Henry came away with a four second victory over Cefalu.  


Ross (49.43) also got a taste of first place in the 100-yard freestyle with a three tenths of a second victory over his Delta State foe. Cefalu also got a victory in the 100-yard breaststroke, as he won by nearly a second.


The Ladies and Gents will be back in action on Saturday when Incarnate Word comes to the Centenary fitness Center for a 1 p.m. start.
