Mustangs Best Gents on Saturday

SHREVEPORT -- The Centenary men’s swimming team hosted nationally ranked SMU on Saturday, and from the start the Mustangs cruised over the Gents, 119-78, at the Centenary Fitness Center. 

 

In the first event, the 200-yard medley relay team for the Mustangs set a pool record with the Gents a close second. Centenary finished the opening event second, third, fifth and sixth, as the relay team of John Cefalu, Clay Malinovsky, Peter Henry and Bryan Myers helped the Gents to their second place showing.

 

The 200-yard freestyle was a surprise for the Gents, as junior Wlad Montoya out touched James Shake of SMU by .10 of a second to win the event, while posting a team-best for the season in the event (1:47.35).

 

The 50-yard freestyle is touted as the fastest event of the meet, as freshman Devin Ross (22.18) finished in a career-best; while sophomore Josh Pena (22.37) also swam well, finishing third for the Gents.

 

In the 200-yard butterfly, junior Rustin Green (2:00.61) and senior Chase Lambert went second and third to contribute to the Gents point total. In the 100-yard freestyle Montoya (49.25) narrowly out touch SMU Travis Callaghan for second place.

 

Cefalu helped the Gents with to a second place finish in the 200-yard backstroke (1:59.36), and his time was a team-best for this year. Junior Quinn Larwood was on pace with Colton Ingraham of SMU for the first 400 yards, but in the last 100, Ingraham just bested Larwood for first place.

 

Malinovsky and freshman Wray Borland went second (2:18.74) and third (2:26.26) in the 200-yard breaststroke. However, in the 200-yard freestyle relay, Centenary finished in first place, as the team of Lambert, Josh Pena, Myers and Cefalu won by .85 tenths of a second.

 

The next competition for Centenary will be on Friday and Saturday at the Hendrix Classic and Relays in Conway, Ark.
