Valdez Nets Goal in Extra Time
Friday, October 31, 2008

SHREVEPORT – Freshman Katie Valdez hit paydirt from inside 10 yards in the second overtime to lift the Centenary women’s soccer team to a 1-0 victory over IPFW in Summit League play. It was the Ladies’ first win in conference play since a 1-0 victory over IUPUI back in 2005.

IPFW (0-16-1, 0-6-1) had the first offensive look, as Brittany Climmons hit the post at 6:26, but Centenary would answer back three minutes later on shot by Valdez. Valdez would try to score late in the first period, but her opportunity was stopped by Mastodon keeper Kristen McFadden.

In the second half the Ladies (3-13-1, 1-6-0) would have three offensive chances midway through, but none of them could find the back of the net.

At the end of regulation the match got interesting, as a foul was called on Centenary with two seconds left, but an inadvertent whistle started the clock and regulation ended. However, the referee put the two seconds back on and Jessica Scheffee’s shot nearly went in, but the ball was tipped away by junior keeper Kate Donnelly.

In the first overtime neither team had an offensive threat, as Kateri Till and Candace Rushing’s shots went wide. But one minute into the second overtime Valdez finally was able to put Centenary over the top after receiving a clean pass from Chelsea Cardwell.

Centenary will close the season on Sunday morning with a home match against IUPUI at 11 a.m.
