Monday, January 12, 2009

SHREVEPORT – Centenary sophomore Ashley Jackson had her second double-double of the season with 12 points and 13 rebounds, but three consecutive 3-point field goals midway through the second half by Oakland lifted the Golden Grizzlies to a 66-54 victory on Monday night in Summit League action.

To start the game, Centenary (3-13, 1-4) found itself down by six (8-2), but the Ladies battled back and were able regain the lead late in the period off of Jackson lay-up.

Centenary had its largest lead of six twice during the opening 20 minutes, the first time came at 2:22 after a junior Natasha Draganic three and the other was after another Jackson bunny with 18 seconds left.

During the opening half, the Ladies were able to dominate down low with 18 points, while scoring 12 points off turnovers. Oakland (13-4, 5-1), meanwhile, also had its share of good play in the paint with seven first half blocks by Brittany Carnago.

After Oakland’s April Kidd hit a lay-up 29 seconds into the second half, Centenary would answer the call with a 5-0 run to go up nine (34-25).

However, with the Ladies up by eight with 11:27 left in the game and all the momentum, Oakland’s senior leader Jessica Pike stepped-up and hit two of her team’s three 3-point field goals in just over a minute.

Pike’s second three at 10:07 gave the Golden Grizzlies the lead for good, as Centenary went nearly four minutes without a point. Draganic was able to end the drought and cut Oakland’s lead down to six with just over seven minutes to play, but the Ladies wouldn’t draw any closer.

Individually for the Ladies, Draganic scored a career-high 11 points, while seniors Cierra Bush and Karolina Zaloga each added nine. For Oakland, Carnago had the conference’s first triple-double since Dec. 2006, with 14 points, 10 rebounds and 11 blocks. Pike, meanwhile, scored a game-high 16 points, while Kidd and Hanna Reising chipped in with 10 each.

The next action for Centenary will be on Saturday at IUPUI with tip-off set for 3 p.m. Shreveport time. The game can be heard on and 91.3 KSCL in Shreveport/Bossier City.
