Saturday, January 17, 2009

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – It was battle from the start, but a late 9-0 run by IUPUI after Centenary cut its deficit down to three helped the Jaguars to a 65-53 win on Saturday afternoon in Summit League action.

Centenary (3-14, 1-5) started the game by shooting 2-for-3 from outside and the defense held IUPUI to just 2-of-9 from the field. Senior Cierra Bush started the game on fire, by connecting on both of her shots from long range.

However, late in the half, IUPUI (8-9, 3-3) started heating up, as it went on a 14-6 run that was helped by eight Ladies turnovers. The Jaguars also dominated Centenary down low in the first period, by scoring 18 points in the paint and 12 off of Ladies’ miscues.

Early in the second half, IUPUI stormed out of the locker room and went up by 10, but the Ladies showed no quit and got the Jags lead down to six just two minutes later. However, three minutes later IUPUI went back up by double digits, (44-33).

Centenary, meanwhile, went on a 16-4 run and was only down by three (50-47) with six minutes left. The aforementioned 9-0 run by IUPUI was started on a lay-up by BryKeesha Tate with 4:40 left.

In the end it was too big of a hole for Centenary to climb out of, as the Ladies couldn’t cut it under double figures.

Individually for Centenary, it was led by sophomore Anne Farrell, who scored 15 points, while Bush followed with 13. Bush also led the Ladies with eight rebounds and senior Karolina Zaloga gave a team-best six assists.

Centenary will see its next action on Monday evening at Western Illinois with tip-off set to go up at 7 p.m. The game can be heard on and 91.3 KSCL with the pregame show starting at 6:45 p.m.
