Monday, January 19, 2009

MACOMB, Ill. – Sophomore Ashley Jackson had her third double-double of the season, but it wasn’t enough for the Centenary women’s basketball team, as it fell 76-52 to Western Illinois on Monday night in Summit League play.

Centenary (3-15, 1-6) started the game much like it has during its past three contests -- on fire. The Ladies began the game shooting a blistering 66 percent (4-for-6), while the defense contained the Westerwinds to 25 percent (1-for-4).

As the half went on, WIU (6-12, 4-3) got hotter going on an 11-3 run, as it  was 5-of-8 from the field, while Centenary hit just one field goal, a 3-pointer by Jackson. The Shreveport, La., native led the way for Centenary at the break with nine points and four rebounds.

Free throws were the difference in the first half, as Western went to the line 17 times and hit 14. The Ladies, meanwhile, visited the charity stripe just five times and connecting on three.

Centenary started the second 20 minutes again outscoring WIU (8-7), but it didn’t take long for the Westerwinds start heating up. Their defense kept the Ladies from hitting a field goal for over four minutes.

To close the game, WIU went on a 9-1 run, as Centenary’s one point came on a Jackson free throw. To go along with their defense, the Westerwinds shot 50 percent (14-of-28) from the field and 45 percent (5-of-11) from long range.

For the game, Jackson led the way with 18 points and 10 rebounds, while Cierra Bush followed with 12 points and five assists. For WIU, Amanda Walker scored a game-high 19 points and Lyndi Thorman, who came off the bench to score 16 points and grab 10 rebounds.

The next action for Centenary will be on Saturday at home against UMKC and that game will be heard on www.GoCentenary.com and 91.3KSCL in Shreveport/Bossier.
