Ladies Begin Three Game Homestand

SHREVEPORT – The Centenary women’s basketball team is in a must win situation this weekend when it begins its three-game homestand on Saturday against UMKC at noon and then host Southern Utah Monday at 7 p.m.

The Ladies started both games last weekend with leads, but they were unable to hold a seven point margins against IUPUI and Western Illinois. In those two games, sophomore Ashley Jackson averaged 13 points and eight rebounds, while classmate Anne Farrell shot a blistering 63 percent (7-for-11).

Against UMKC in the Gold Dome last season, the Ladies lost by eight, but were led by Jackson and Farrell’s 20 points. In Kansas City, Centenary was plagued by a poor shooting night -- 27 percent from the floor, 25 percent from long range and 55 percent from the free throw line.

Last season against the Thunderbirds, Farrell scored a combined 29 points, which helped Centenary split the season series. However, the Ladies again had a tough time from the floor, shooting 33 percent between the two games.

This season the Kangaroos are led by Chazny Morris, who averages a league leading 18.1 points per game, but is shooting just 39 percent from the field. Her 7.1 rebounds per contest is tied for seventh with Farrell.

In its last seven games, UMKC is 4-3, but has dropped two of its last five in conference play. In their two wins the ‘Roos defeated IUPUI 80-75 in overtime on Jan. 5, and North Dakota State by six last Saturday.

SUU, meanwhile, will be looking for its first win on the road this weekend. The Thunderbirds are 0-8 away from Cedar City and have lost 6-of-8, only beating Westminster College and UMKC.

Leading the SUU offense is Anne Westwood-Higbee, who scores 11.3 points per game, while Cassi Jones tops the defense with 7.4 rebounds.

Both games can be heard on www.GoCentenary.com and 91.3 KSCL in Shreveport/Bossier City with the pregame show starting 15 minutes before tip-off.
