Ladies Come Up Short Against UMKC
Saturday, January 24, 2009

SHREVEPORT – Senior Karolina Zaloga scored a career-high 26 points and grabbed a season-best eight rebounds in Centenary’s 66-58 Summit League loss to UMKC on Saturday afternoon.

To start the game it was the Zaloga and Chazny Morris show, as the two scored the game’s first 10 points. The Ladies opened the game with a 4-0 lead, but UMKC answered back with a 10-0 run to go up by six.

Centenary (3-16, 1-7) did immediately cut it back to three, but the ‘Roos went on a 21-8 run to go up 19 with 3:59 left. A pair of sophomore Jasmine Bothwell free throws just seconds later ignited an 8-0 run for the Ladies, which brought the contest within six at the break.

To open the second 20 minutes UMKC (9-10, 4-4) went on 9-0 run, but again Centenary would climb right back in the game. The Ladies returned the 9-0 run to get within to six, as Zaloga scored five of Centenary’s points.

After senior Ceirra Bush and freshman Chelsea Johnson each knocked down a pair of jumpers the Ladies got the game to four (49-45) with 10:40 left. The Ladies though would not get any closer, as UMKC quickly got its lead back to nine.

With a 1:08 left, Bothwell hit a runner to get the game back to four, but the Ladies had to begin to foul. Centenary’s downfall in the waning moments was its inability to block out, as UMKC pulled down three offensive rebounds in the last 45 seconds to secure the win.

Behind Zaloga for Centenary was Bothwell, who scored nine points, while sophomore Ashley Jackson dished a team-best four assists. For UMKC, Morris led the way with 25, while Simone Bridges and LeAndrea Thomas scored 13 and 11 respectively.

The Ladies next action will be Monday at 7 p.m. against Southern Utah, with the game being aired on and 91.3 KSCL in Shreveport/Bossier City.
