SHREVEPORT – After finishing last season in second place and grabbing the No. 1 seed in postseason play, the Centenary softball team was picked to close 2009 in third by The Summit Leagues coaches.

The preseason favorite is North Dakota State (63 points), who earned seven first place votes, while last years tournament championship Western Illinois (56 points) received a pair top nods.

The Ladies (48 points), meanwhile, were chosen as a solid third place, and seven points in front of fourth place South Dakota State (41 points). Southern Utah (38 points) was just three points behind the Jackrabbits, while Oakland (31 points) was picked sixth.

At the bottom of the field is IPFW (18 points), who was picked seventh, UMKC (15 points) in eighth and IUPUI (14 points) ninth.

“That’s where we were expected to be picked and in truth it matters where you finish and we hope to move up a couple of notches,” said head coach Mark Montgomery. “I feel we will be better than we were picked because of what we have coming back.”

Centenary returns a trio of all-league selections in senior Emerald Doria and junior Allison Shepperd and sophomore Caitlin Cavarra.  Shepperd, a third baseman and first team selection, finished the 2008 season with a league-best 18 doubles.  Doria, a shortstop returns to the field after a sophomore campaign in which she was named to The Summit League first team after posting a .276 batting average, 32 walks and 24 runs scored.  Cavarra finished her first year in a Centenary uniform with a .263 clip and 12 RBIs in 57 games en route to being named to The Summit League second team.

The first action for the Ladies will be on Friday, Feb. 6, against Southern Illinois Edwardsville at 9:30 a.m. The game can be heard on www.GoCentenary.com along with other selected games during the season.
