SHREVEPORT—Gary Redus II poured in a career-best 23 points, but it wasn’t enough for the Centenary men’s basketball team, as it fell to Oral Roberts, 84-71 on Saturday afternoon in Summit League action.

Centenary (7-15, 5-5 Summit) put up a fight in the first half, but allowed Oral Roberts to score 46-second half points to send the Gents to a .500 mark in league play.

Oral Roberts (11-11, 9-1 Summit) opened the game with a three-point play by Marcus Lewis, but a dunk by Redus put Centenary on the board early at 18:27. A 7-0 run by the Golden Eagles led by Robert Jarvis allowed ORU to pull ahead 10-2.

Three consecutive three pointers by Lance Hill, Maxx Nakwaasah, and Redus brought the Gents within two (15-13) with just over 12 minutes to play. From then on, both teams exchanged baskets, not allowing one another to take a lead larger than three.

Strong first half play by Hill sparked a late surge, allowing Centenary to take its first lead at the 4:43 mark on a lay-up by the senior forward to make it 27-26. The Gents took the lead three more times within the final four minutes of the half, but a lay-up by Dominique Morrison with 25 seconds left sent Centenary into halftime trailing by one, 38-37.

In the opening 20 minutes, Hill led with 13, while Jarvis had 10 for ORU. Centenary forced 12 Golden Eagle turnovers on eight steals.

Entering the second half, a Redus lay-up and an Adams’ three gave Centenary a 42-40 lead at the 18-minute mark. Following, the Golden Eagles, though, managed to go on a 10-0 run to extend their lead to 50-42 with 15 minutes to play.

Hill connected on four points of his own to bring the Gents back within seven, but a lay-up by Lewis and a three by Jarvis gave ORU a 62-50 lead at 11:01. Centenary never narrowed the deficit to under seven in the final minutes of play.

The Gents were able to knock down late-game free throws, but it wasn’t enough as the Golden Eagles’ largest lead of 13 came in the last few seconds when Morrison hit one of two from the charity stripe to make it 84-71.

Behind Redus’ 23 points was Hill, who had 17, while Adams added 15. ORU, meanwhile, was led by Lewis, who had 21, while Jarvis tacked on 20.

Centenary shot 42.9 percent (24-of-56) from the floor, while ORU was 53.7 percent (29-of-54). The Gents knocked down 10 three pointers on the afternoon, but the Golden Eagles poured in 40 points in the paint. Centenary was out rebounded, 41-30.
