Ladies Go For Two Saturday
Thursday, February 5, 2009

SHREVEPORT – After defeating Oral Roberts for the first time in school history last Saturday, the Centenary women’s basketball team will now try to take down Oakland for the first time and sweep IPFW.

Against ORU, the Ladies showed no quit as they found themselves down by nine with 12 minutes remaining. Centenary was able to find its shot and went on an 18-3 run that was started by sophomore Ashley Jackson.

Jackson is the Ladies leading scorer at 9.2 points per game, while Farrell is shade behind her at 8.7 a game. Farrell is leading rebounder for Centenary with 146 this season and she averages seven a game.

In their last meeting with Oakland, the Ladies were hanging on to a nine point lead with nine minutes to play, but three straight Jessica Pike 3’s helped push OU in front and win by a dozen. Before that point the Grizzlies had not hit a 3-point field goal all evening.

Leading Oakland’s high potent offense is Pike, who is scoring 16 points game, while Melissa Jeltema (13.5 ppg) and Brittany Carnago (10.1 ppg) also score in double figures. Jeltema (182) also tops in the team in rebounds, while Carnago is leading in blocks with 64.

After getting its biggest win since joining the Summit League in 2003-04, the Ladies will try to create separation between itself and IPFW. The Ladies were 22 points winners over the Mastodons back in January, and a win would keep Centenary in charge of its postseason destiny.

Individually for IPFW, Chelsey Jackson tops the team with 12.3 points per game, while Jordan Zuppe is second with 10.2 points. Zuppe is also deadly from outside nailing 48 3’s and her teammate Courtney Reed is also a sharp shooter, hitting 39 times from long range.

Both games this weekend can be heard www.GoCentenary.com and 91.3 KSCL in Shreveport/Bossier City with the pregame show starting 15 minutes before tip-off.
