Gents Look to Sweep Oakland on Saturday

SHREVEPORT—On Saturday, the Centenary men’s basketball team hopes to regain its winning ways when it faces Oakland in a 5 p.m. central tip-off in Summit League play. The Gents will look for the two-game sweep over the Golden Grizzlies this season in a crucial league contest.

Centenary (7-16, 5-6 Summit) meets Oakland after suffering a 71-59 loss to IPFW on Thursday evening. The Gents struggled from behind the arch, only sinking 4-of-25 on the game and allowing the Mastodons to go on a 9-0 run to pull ahead near the end. Nick Stallings finished with a team-high 16 points in the loss.

Leading Centenary is Stallings with 16.4 points and 6.3 rebounds a game, while junior teammate Chase Adams is adding 14.3 points and 4.4 rebounds to the Gents’ attack. Gary Redus II has improved to 10.7 points and 3.3 rebounds a contest.

Th Gents are shooting 40 percent from the floor, while averaging 62.9 points a game and pulling down 30.3 rebounds each contest. Centenary continues to lead the league in steals with 9.0 and three-point field goals with 7.8 a game. 

Oakland (14-11, 7-5 Summit) is coming off an impressive 81-69 win over Oral Roberts on Thursday. In that game, Erik Kangas poured in 21 points, while Keith Benson notched a double-double of 19 points and 10 rebounds.

The Golden Grizzlies are led by Kangas’ 18.8 points a game and Johnathon Jones’ 13.7 a contest. Benson is the leads in rebounds with 7.4 an outing, while still managing to chip in with 13.2 points a game.

As a team, Oakland is averaging 73.4 points each game and shooting 46.2 percent from the floor. The Golden Grizzlies pull down 33.8 rebounds a game.

In its last meeting with one another, Centenary took a convincing 80-60 win over Oakland in its home opener back on Jan. 8. Nick Stallings led all scorers with 26 points and the Gents managed to shoot an impressive 53 percent from the floor and 58 percent from behind the arch, sinking 11-of-19 three pointers.

Oakland leads the all-time series, 8-3 since the 2003-2004 season.
