Late Inning Pitching and Timely Hitting Leads to Wins
Saturday, February 7, 2009

SHREVEPORT – Three hits and four RBIs by Centenary freshman Lindsey Smith helped carry the offense, while 16 combined strike outs by freshman Hillary Phillips and sophomore Jessica Bock put a strangle on SIU Edwardsville and Boston College Friday afternoon. The Ladies were victorious over the Cougars 4-2, but it took nine innings to defeat the Eagles 8-6.

Game One

Centenary allowed two first inning SIUE runs, but the Ladies answered back with three straight second inning hits, which brought up Smith, who drove home all three with a double to the wall. Two batters later freshman Vicki Honeycutt reached base on an error, which chased Smith home for the fourth run of the inning.

Pitching lights out for Centenary was Phillips (1-0), who retired 12-of-14 batters between the second and fifth innings. Late in the game the Odessa, Texas, native was able to fan five before getting into a bit of trouble in the bottom of the seventh with two down. Bock came in for the one out relief appearance and notched her first save at Centenary.

Game Two

Senior Emerald Doria gave Centenary an early 1-0 lead on a solo home run, but BC scored four runs between the second and third. However, the Ladies showed no quit and put a three spot up in the bottom half of the third.

Sophomore Caitlin Cavarra scored Centenary’s first run of the third frame run after the Eagles infield failed to pay attention to her on a double steal. Junior Haley Bassett plated the other two runs on a double to the right field gap.

The two teams continued to exchange runs until the hero of the evening, junior Allison Sheppered came up with no outs and a runner on second in the ninth. The Marshall, Texas, native lifted a pitch down the left field line for a game-ending two-run bomb.

Bock, meanwhile, went the distance allowed six runs, walked five and fanned eight, while only allowing BC to score two more runs after its three run third.

On Saturday, Centenary will play Missouri State at 3:30 p.m. and then right afterwards play Bryant at 5:30 p.m. The Ladies’ game against MSU will be heard online at www.GoCentenary.com.
