SHREVEPORT—With its recent success and play of late, the Centenary men’s basketball team and head coach Greg Gary have become an exciting team to watch and because of that, ESPN.com has recognized the Gents among other college basketball teams across the nation.

In his recent column, “Forde Minutes,” ESPN.com senior writer Pat Forde acknowledged the Gents, along with 40 names, games, and teams making news in college basketball.

For every angry coach during the final stretch of the season, Forde has issued a positive role model to follow, while naming a “Freshman Report Card”, highlighting top newcomers. Meanwhile, he has also designated seven schools with “Flashy First Seasons,” who are getting the best returns on their 2008 hires.

Among the seven mentioned is Centenary’s Gary, who has taken a program up several notches since his start as the Gents’ head coach this season. In his column, Forde names Gary as one of seven coaches doing the best job in his first season at a new school.

“Greg Gary, Centenary. Last season's RPI: 288. This season's RPI: 255. Off the beaten path, but worth mentioning because he's gotten the Gentlemen off their path of being beaten routinely in the Summit League. Centenary is 5-5 in the Summit, marking its most victories in league play in five years. Record the previous four: 10-54. The Gents are only 7-15 overall, but chalk much of that up to suicidal scheduling—every December game was on the road, and all eight of them were losses,” said Forde, ESPN.com.
