Free Throws and Turnovers Doom Ladies
Saturday, February 14, 2009

SHREVEPORT – Sophomore Anne Farrell had her fourth double-double of the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds, but it wasn’t enough for the Centenary women’s basketball team, as it fell to Western Illinois 73-60 in Summit League play.

It was a slow start for the Ladies, but a free throw by sophomore Ashley Jackson helped kick start the offense. Centenary responded with a 16-6 run and was able to take a one point advantage late in the first half.

However, the Ladies couldn’t pull away from WIU, as the Westerwinds took a 12 point lead into the locker room. During the last eight and a half minutes, Centenary turned the ball over five times and gave up nine free throws.

After falling down by 13 to open the second period, the Ladies fought back and got the game within five. Centenary though could not get any closer, as WIU was able to pull away late by going on a 7-3 run to go up 14.

One of the biggest things for the Westerwinds was their ability to take advantage of Centenary’s mistakes, as WIU scored 30 points off of 24 Ladies’ turnovers.

For the Ladies, freshman Beth Alberson led the way with 14 points, while classmate Chelsea Johnson followed with 13. WIU, meanwhile, was led by Anne Borgertpoepping, who had a career-high 20 points and followed up by Amanda Walker and Jordon O’Brien, who scored 18 and 11 respectively.

Centenary will jump back into action on Monday against IUPUI at 7 p.m. in the Gold Dome. The game can be heard on and 91.3 KSCL in Shreveport/Bossier.
