Monday, February 16, 2009

SHREVEPORT – With just four seconds left, senior Karolina Zaloga drove the length of the floor, but her potential game tying lay-up at the buzzer didn’t fall through, as the Centenary women’s basketball team lost 57-55 to IUPUI on Monday night in Summit League action.

With IUPUI (14-12, 9-6) up by two (15-13) at the 6:51 mark things were seemingly going in the favor the Jaguars, but after two disagreements with the officials within a second of each other, head coach Shann Hart was ejected.

With the momentum shifted, Centenary (4-21, 2-12) jumped on the chance by going on a 7-0 run and went up by five. However, as the game proved no lead was safe, as IUPUI went on a 9-2 run to take a two point lead into halftime.

Coming out of the break, freshman Chelsea Johnson nailed a three to put Centenary up by one. But again IUPUI answered back with a three of its own and went up two; the Ladies though tied the game right back up on their next trip down the floor.

A few minutes later Centenary took its largest lead of four on a bunny by sophomore Ashley Jackson. The Ladies would hang on to their lead until the 1:17 mark, but Julia Whitted scored on a free throw to give IUPUI the lead for good.

After back-to-back turnovers within 30 seconds of each other, Centenary seemed to have lost its composure with 45 seconds left. However, with 11 ticks left, Jackson again answered the call got the Ladies deficit back to one.

Centenary quickly fouled and BryKeesha Tate, who only managed to hit one of her two free throws, which set up the chance for Zaloga. Zaloga was able to fake her defender, but her shot rimmed in and out and the ball landed in the waiting hands of Nicole James.

Leading the way for Centenary was junior Leslie Forest, who scored 13 points and pulled down eight rebounds. For IUPUI, Whitted led all scorers with 19 points, while Jernisha Cann followed with 13 points and 13 rebounds and Janna Eichelberger rounded out the double figure scoring with 11.
