Ladies Need to Win Both Contests

SHREVEPORT – With the end of the regular season just two weeks away, the Centenary women’s basketball team will have to win both of its games at Southern Utah and UMKC this weekend.

Last weekend, the Ladies went 0-2, but shot better from the field and outside. However, turnovers and free throws were the teams downfall, as Centenary hit just 53 percent of its free charity shots and lost the ball 52 times.

Against Western Illinois and IUPUI, freshman Chelsea Johnson led the team with 20 points, while sophomore Anne Farrell grabbed seven rebounds per contest. Also having a good weekend was junior Leslie Forest, who scored a season-high 13 points against IUPUI and averaged 6.5 rebounds.

Saturday’s foe SUU is holding on to the last spot reserved for The Summit League Championship by a game over IPFW and two over Centenary. The Thunderbirds have lost four straight games and eight of their last 10.

Leading the SUU offensive effort is Anne Westwood-Higbee, who is scoring 11.9 per game. Cassi Jones, meanwhile, tops the teams in rebounds with 7.4, while Westwood-Higbee averages 7.2.

After clipping the Ladies by eight points in the Gold Dome, UMKC has lost 4-of-6, including two straight. The Kangaroos lost to South Dakota State, 93-61, and 89-70 to North Dakota State.

Chazny Morris leads UMKC’s offense with 17.7 points per game and the defensive effort with 6.5 rebounds. However, Morris does top the team in turnovers as well, losing the ball an average of 3.1 times a contest.

The Ladies’ games will be broadcast on and 91.3 KSCL in Shreveport/Bossier City. The pregame show will begin 15 minutes prior to tip-off with play-by-play man Doug Greenwald.
