CEDAR CITY, Utah – Freshman Maxx Nakwaasah scored a career-high 19 points, but it wasn’t enough for the Centenary men’s basketball team, as the Gents fell to Southern Utah 79-68 on Saturday night in Summit League play.

After falling down by 11 midway through the first half, Centenary (7-21, 5-11) went on a 6-0 run and got within five. However, a 9-2 run by SUU lifted the Thunderbirds to a 10 point advantage heading into halftime.

SUU (10-17, 8-8) quickly went up by 20 early in the second period, but a 19-6 run got the Gents going and were only down eight with 8:39 to play. After a sophomore Gary Redus II dunk with just under a minute and a half to play Centenary found itself down by just six.

However, the Gents couldn’t get any closer, as a game-ending 9-4 run by SUU sealed the fate for Centenary.

Following Nakwaasah’s 19 was Redus, who tallied 16, while junior Chase Adams added 10 and four assists. For SUU, Davis Baker led all scorers with 28 points and John Clifford followed with 13 points and 15 rebounds.

The Gents will now have to win their final two games in order to make The Summit League Championship in March. Centenary will host North Dakota State on Thursday and then will close the regular season on Saturday against South Dakota State.
