SHREVEPORT-The Centenary Ladies volleyball team prepares to open up their 2009 season at the Lady Techster tournament hosted by Louisiana Tech on Friday and Saturday.

Head Coach Dan Gwitt and team are eagerly awaiting the start of the new season after having just completed preseason training. The Ladies will face Tennessee-Martin in their first match on Friday at 12 p.m. followed by a 5 p.m. start against South Alabama later that day.

"Preseason training went well and everyone is staying healthy. We are a lot stronger than a year ago, so I am eager to see what we can do this upcoming weekend," said Gwitt.

On Saturday, Centenary will play host-Louisiana Tech at 12 p.m. and then will conclude the tournament in a 5 p.m. match against Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

The Ladies return six letterwinners from last season featuring junior Bethany Kern, who led the team with 296 digs and 37 aces. Also back is sister, sophomore Brianna Kern, who posted a team-best 237 kills and 210 digs. Sophomore Jaclyn Lopez notched a team-high 603 assists and was third-best with 28 blocks.

"Our returners are mentally tough, which has made it an easier transition for our freshmen."

Gwitt is excited to welcome five newcomers to this year's squad as he rosters only one upperclassman.

"I am extremely interested to see how our freshmen respond.  This weekend will be a good test to see where we are and what we need to do to get ready for conference play," said Gwitt.

After the conclusion of this weekend's tournament, the Ladies will travel to the Drake Invitational in Iowa on Sept. 4-5 and will not play their home opener in the Gold Dome until Sept. 15 against Louisiana-Lafayette at 7 p.m.
