Ladies Defeat UA Pine-Bluff, Drop Match to Louisiana Tech

RUSTON, La.-On the second and final day of the Lady Techster Invitational, the Centenary volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision to Louisiana Tech, but bounced back to defeat UA Pine-Bluff, 3-0, for its first win of the season on Saturday.

Centenary (1-3) lost three straight sets to the Lady Techsters, 25-12, 25-16, 25-14 in the first match of the day.

In set one against Louisiana Tech, the Ladies tied it a 4-4 on an attack error, but that was as close as Centenary would get in that game, dropping the opening set 25-12. The Ladies had just seven kills and 10 errors for a -.107 attack percentage.

Midway through the second set, it looked like Centenary would find a way to take the game as it lead 16-12, but Louisiana Tech's Jennifer Goodwin had 12 straight serves that lead to five Centenary errors, allowing the Lady Techsters to win game two, 25-16.

Centenary's offense continued to struggle in the final set as Louisiana Tech went up 9-1 before sophomore Stevie Hurlbirt stopped the damage with a kill from classmate Jennifer Kunze. The Ladies combined for 14 errors in the third game, while connecting on only nine kills.

For the match, the Ladies put up a total of 25 kills, led by sophomore Brianna Kern with seven. Freshman Christina Fellows had 16 assists on the match, while junior Bethany Kern had 14 digs to pace the Centenary.

Against Pine-Bluff, the Ladies came out strong and maintained a solid lead throughout the first set. Centenary had 14 kills and a .216 attack percentage.

In the second set, sophomore Jaclyn Lopez opened up with two service aces, followed by an attack error and a kill from Kunze to make it a quick 4-0 game. Centenary wouldn't allow the Lions to narrow the deficit at all, as Lopez had six straight serves near the end of the set to allow the Ladies a 25-11 win.

The third set began with a kill by freshman Shelby Singleton and ended with a kill by freshman Blair Claypoole. The Ladies and Lions stayed fairly close all set as Centenary put up 16 kills to Pine-Bluff's nine.

In the match, the Ladies posted 42 kills led by Fellows and Kunze with 14 apiece. Lopez had 37 assists and five service aces in the match to pace the Ladies and Bethany Kern had 12 digs.

Centenary will be back in action on Sept. 4-5 at the Drake Invitational. The Ladies open up with South Dakota at 11 a.m. followed by Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 5:30 p.m. on Friday. They will then follow up with Valparaiso at 3:30 p.m. and Drake at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday.
