BROOKINGS, S.D.- In its Summit League opener, the Centenary women's volleyball team fell 3-0 (25-18, 25-19, 25-19) to South Dakota State on Friday evening.

Centenary (1-8, 0-1 Summit) had a balanced effort from all players, but couldn't overcome several rallies by the Jackrabbits in all three sets.

In set one, the Ladies went up 4-0, but couldn't hold on to the early lead as the Jackrabbits responded with an 8-0 run near the middle of the set to break it open.

Set two remained close throughout, but South Dakota State found a way to pull off a .393 attack percentage with only two errors as the Ladies tallied 11 kills and seven errors to drop the second frame.

A combined 19 errors made set three a fight, but a 6-0 run for the Jackrabbits midway through the set allowed them to walk away with a 3-0 sweep.

Sophomore outside hitter Stevie Hurlbirt had a team-high 11kills to lead Centenary. Classmate Jaclyn Lopez directed the Ladies offense with 22 assists and two service aces.

Junior libero Bethany Kern tallied eight digs and two service aces for the Ladies, while sophomore Brianna Kern and Hurlbirt had seven digs.

Centenary was outhit by South Dakota State, .021 to .250. Defensively, the Ladies had 27 digs to the Jackrabbits' 42.

The Ladies will take on North Dakota State on Saturday at 7p.m. at the Bentson Bunker Field House in Fargo, N.D.
