SHREVEPORT-Two goals by senior Todd Faulkinberry gave the Centenary men's soccer team a 2-1 advantage over Central Baptist in Sunday's afternoon match.

The Gents (1-4-1) outshot the Mustangs, 22-14, to pick up their first win of the season.

It seemed to be a fairly competitive first half as Centenary put up the first shot as sophomore Brian Hurlburt's ball was blocked at the 2:20 mark.

Central Baptist attempted at three shots, but two were blocked and one went wide at 10 minutes.

It was Faulkinberry's shot that was headed into the top corner on an assist by sophomore John McHugh at 14:51 that gave Centenary the early lead. The Gents sent eight more shots towards goal, as three were saved in the final minutes of play heading into halftime.

With a 1-0 lead, Mustang Sabelo Hlongwane attempted to tie the game, but the ball was saved by second-half freshman keeper Robbie Ramirez at 49 minutes.

At 53:56, McHugh crossed to Faulkinberry, who dribbled the ball to the near post and reached the back left corner, for his second goal of the game, giving the Gents a 2-0 lead.

Junior Zac Farrar fired off a sharp shot that almost reached net, but was saved by keeper Stephen Maxwell at 62 minutes.

Central Baptist connected on its only goal on a shot by Jacob Tackitt as he went one-on-one with the keeper at 73:43.

Five minutes to play, Faulkinberry tried for his third goal, but it was saved by new Mustang keeper, Chance Murphy.

Junior goalkeeper Rennie Walker and Ramirez split time in goal as Walker played the first half, tallying three saves, while Ramirez garnered two saves in the last 45 minutes.

Faulkinberry and Hurlburt each fired off six shots, as Faulkinberry had four on goal. McHugh had three shots, two on goal and two assists for Centenary.

The Gents will open Summit League play on Friday at IPFW in a 7:00 p.m.start.
