SHREVEPORT-The Centenary women's volleyball team took a competitive Oakland squad to four sets, before falling 3-1 in Summit League action on Friday evening.

The Ladies (3-11, 0-4 Summit) came out strong, winning set one (26-24), but couldn't overcome attack errors, dropping the final three sets, 25-21, 25-23, and 25-23.

Sophomore Jennifer Kunze had 11 kills in the opening set for a .786 attack percentage. Centenary opened and held onto a slight lead before Oakland took advantage of three attack errors to move ahead, 15-14.

A kill by freshman Christina Fellows tied the set back up. But again, back-to-back kills by the Golden Grizzlies allowed Oakland to take a 18-17 lead. Kunze fired off six kills for six of the Ladies final eight points for a set-one win.

Set two began with two Ladies' errors, allowing Oakland to take the lead and remain on top the entire set. Centenary had its strongest run when freshman Blair Claypoole connected on a kill and a service ace, while the Golden Grizzlies made two attack errors, making it a 22-18 set.  The late run, however, wasn't enough as Oakland won set two, 25-21.

The lead changed nine times in set three. Centenary took its first lead on a 4-0 run, led by Claypoole with back-to-back service aces and a kill. But Oakland responded with two aces of its own to regain the lead, 8-6.

Two late attack errors by Centenary gave Oakland a 23-20 lead and it seemed to be enough as the Golden Grizzlies took set three, 25-23.

What proved to be the final set ended in the match in dramatic fashion as Centenary out attacked Oakland with 13 to 9 kills and a .154 to .138 percentage. But it was seven Ladies' errors that dropped set three.

Centenary fell down quickly, 6-2 on five errors. Down by four (19-15), the Ladies responded with four straight points on three kills and an Oakland attack error to bring the set within one, 20-19. A late kill by Brianna Kern tied the score at 23-23. However, a Centenary service error and a Golden Grizzly final kill sealed the match for Oakland.

The Ladies out attacked Oakland in every category with 58 kills to 52 led by Kunze with 22. Lopez anchored Centenary's offense with a match-high 52 assists. Claypoole tallied five service aces for a match-best.

Defensively, the Ladies tallied 73 digs to Oakland's 60. Junior Bethany Kern had a match-high 22 digs, followed by Brianna Kern with 19.

Centenary will be back in action on Saturday at 7 p.m. when it welcomes IPFW to the Gold Dome.
