Western Illinois Takes Three Sets From Ladies

MACOMB, Ill.-The Centenary women's volleyball team fell 3-0 to Western Illinois in Summit League play on Friday evening.

The Ladies (3-13, 0-6 Summit) were outscored 25-14 in the first set, 25-18 in set two and 25-12 in the final set to fall to 0-6 in league play.

In set one, Centenary went up 2-0 on a kill by freshman Blair Claypoole and a service ace by sophomore Jaclyn Lopez, but Western Illinois tallied seven straight points on five Centenary errors to take a 7-2 lead.

Each team exchanged points throughout the rest of the set, but the Fighting Leathernecks' early lead was held onto for the win in set one, 25-14.

A kill by sophomore Brianna Kern put the Ladies up 4-3 in set two as the lead changed six more times throughout.

With a 12-9 lead, Centenary had two errors that allowed Western Illinois to regain its lead not allowing the Ladies to recover.

Set three was taken over from the beginning by the Fighting Leathernecks as they went up 3-0 from the start. A late 6-0 run secured the final set for Western Illinois as it went ahead by as many as 12, 20-8.

Four late kills by freshman Shelby Singleton, sophomore Jennifer Kunze and Kern weren't enough as the Ladies fell in set three, 25-12.

As a team, Centenary tallied 25 kills to Western Illinois' 33 led by Kunze with 10. Lopez controlled the offense with 23 assists. Defensively, junior Bethany Kern garnered a match-high 12 digs.

The Ladies will back in action at IUPUI on Saturday at 7:00 p.m.
