Sunday, October 4, 2009
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.-It took four sets, but the Centenary women's volleyball team dropped a 3-1 contest to IUPUI on Saturday evening in Summit League action.

Centenary took set one, 25-19, but fell in sets two (25-13), three (25-17), and four (25-20) to fall to 3-14 on the season and 0-7 in Summit League play.

Set one was a 15-15 tie until the Ladies used three straight attack errors by IUPUI to go ahead 18-15. Three late kills and a service ace by sophomore Jaclyn Lopez gave the Ladies a victory in set one.

Set two was dominated early by IUPUI as the Jaguars went on a 6-0 run to take a 16-7 lead. During that span, the Ladies committed three errors. It was a late three point rally on two kills by freshman Christina Fellows and sophomore Stevie Hurlbirt and a service ace by sophomore Brianna Kern that sparked a Centenary run, but in the end, it wasn't enough.

In set three, it was back and forth as Centenary saw itself down by just three, 19-16 late in the set. However, five straight kills by a strong IUPUI offense sent them on to a final fourth set.

The Ladies last lead in set four came at a 6-5 advantage when freshman Shelby Singleton sent down a kill. The Jaguars then responded quickly, not allowing Centenary to move any closer than a 10-10 tie. Four consecutive possessions led to a 4-0 run late in the set, giving IUPUI 25-20 edge.

As a team, Centenary tallied 42 kills to IUPUI's 55. Hulbirt had 10 kills to lead the Ladies offensively, while Lopez had 39 assists. Defensively, Kern had 16 digs.

The Ladies will host Southern Utah on Friday, Oct. 9 at 7:00 p.m. in the Gold Dome.
