Volleyball Drops 3-1 Match to UMKC

SHREVEPORT-The Centenary women's volleyball team fell to UMKC on Sunday in Summit League play, 3-1.

The Ladies (3-16, 0-9  Summit) couldn't overcome a solid performance by the Kangaroos (7-12, 3-6 Summit). Centenary opened with a 25-18 set one win, but fell in sets two (25-16), three (25-18) and four (25-10).

In set one, the Ladies opened up with a 3-0 lead, but two errors and a UMKC kill later tied the score. Midway through the set, Centenary responded with four straight points, two of which were kills by freshman Blair Claypoole.

The Ladies were able to hold onto their early lead and take set one from the Kangaroos.

Centenary never led in set two as UMKC tallied a .500 attack percentage with 15 kills and one error. The Ladies got within six late in the set at 21-15, but it proved to be too late for a rally to occur, as the Kangaroos won set two.

A 5-0 run in the third set gave UMKC a 16-14 lead after Centenary had controlled the lead from the beginning. From that point on, the Ladies were never able to regain a lead, committing 10 errors with a -.09 attack percentage.

UMKC took control of the fourth and final set from the start, going on a 4-0 run on four straight kills. The Ladies fell down by as many as 14 and struggled to narrow the deficit at all. A .467 attack percentage by UMKC to Centenary's -.11 was the key difference in the last set.

As a team, Centenary tallied 37 kills led by sophomore Brianna Kern with 13. UMKC had 54 led by Kelsey Knoche and Jamie Hagerman with 14 apiece. Sophomore setter Jaclyn Lopez had a match-high 28 assists for the Ladies.

Defensively, Centenary had a match-high 47 digs as junior Bethany Kern garnered 13. UMKC tallied 45 digs, led by Kayla Riggs with 11.

The Ladies will take on Southern University at 7 pm on Tuesday in non-conference action in the Gold Dome.
