Ladies Fall in Close Match to WIU

SHREVEPORT-The Centenary women's volleyball team played a close match, but fell in three straight sets to Western Illinois on Saturday night in Summit League play.

The Ladies (4-20, 0-13 Summit) battled the Fighting Leathernecks to the end, but wasn't able to wrap up any set, falling 25-19, 25-14, and 28-26.

Centenary put up a .317 hitting percentage in the opening set with just two errors, though Western Illinois compiled 20 kills for a .429 percentage.

In the second set, the Ladies couldn't find an offensive groove as they tallied just seven kills to the Fighting Leathernecks' 16.

The third and final set proved to be a competitive one as Centenary pushed Western Illinois to 28 points. The Ladies had 17 kills, though six mistakes ended up making the difference.

Centenary tallied 39 kills to the Fighting Leatherneck's 52. The Ladies were led by freshman Shelby Singleton with nine. Sophomore Jaclyn Lopez and freshman Christina Fellows led the team with 19 and 16 assists respectively.

On the defensive side, junior Bethany Kern had a match-high 21 digs for Centenary.

The Ladies will head to UMKC for a 7:00 pm Thursday match followed by a Saturday match at Southern Utah at 7:00 pm.
