The Centenary men's basketball team will open Summit League play on Thursday at 7:00 pm against Southern Utah before meeting UMKC on Saturday at 7:30 pm.

LAST TIME OUT
SHREVEPORT-The Centenary men's basketball team fell just short against I-49 in-state rival, NSU, 83-80, on Monday evening in non-conference action. The Gents (3-2) fired off a much-improved second half with 56 points, but had to overcome a large deficit to pull off a victory over the Demons (3-2).

LEAGUE LEADING
Centenary ranks among the top of the league in several categories including: 1st in offensive scoring with 80.4 ppg, free throw percentage with a 78 percent (116-148) clip, 3-PT field goal percentage defense, holding its opponents to just 25 percent (19-76) from deep, and steals with 10.2 a game.

TIME TO CLIMB SUMMIT
With five games under their belt, the Gents will look to make their mark in the league with the start of Summit League play this week. Several statistical categories are led by Centenary and several individuals have performed well to this point.

OFFENSIVE HIGHLIGHTS
Sophomore David Perez has shown well offensively for the Gents through five games. The New Iberia, Louisiana native ranks first in the league in scoring with 23.2 ppg, first in free throw percentage at 1.000 (27-of-27) and second with 2.6 3-PT field goals made a game. Junior Roman Tubner is doing his part as well in the guard position, dishing off a 5.2 assists per game for third best in the league.

DEFENSIVE HIGHLIGHTS
Four Gents rank in the top 10 in steals among the league leaders: Tubner with 2.0 a game for fourth best, followed by Perez (1.8), and freshmen Daman Starring (1.6) and Matt Marseille (1.6). Sophomore Maxx Nakwaasah is pulling down a team-leading 6.0 rebounds a game for 13th best in the league.

BONHAM BLOCKS INTO BOOKS
Senior forward Jerrald Bonham is two blocks away from jumping into the record books. He currently has 45 blocks and needs 47 to break into the top 10 all time. The Plano, Texas native is coming off a 17-block season just last year and has totaled five blocks already this season. Bonham is currently ranked ninth in the league in blocks this season.

PEREZ PEFORMS AT LINE
Not only has Perez scored at least 20-points in the first four games (Marquette-25), (Grambling-25), (Texas College-21), (ULM-27) this season, he is currently a perfect 27-of-27 from the free throw line, having shot the second most charity shots on the team behind Tubner with 40.

SCOUTING SOUTHERN UTAH
Southern Utah enters Thursday's contest with a 3-4 record and 0-2 on the road. They have dropped their last two contests to Utah State (49-89) and Tennessee Tech (65-72). The Thunderbirds have collected wins over in-state school, McNeese State (68-59), Univ. of Southwest (111-51), and Wayland Univ. (79-61). Leading the way offensively is Davis Baker with 14.9 ppg, followed by Ryan Brimley at 11.3 ppg. Jake Nielson holds a 10.0 ppg clip, while Matt Massey is leading in rebounds with 7.0 a game.

SERIES VS SOUTHERN UTAH
Southern Utah leads the all-time series over Centenary, 7-5, since the 2003-04 season. The first ever meeting was a 67-65 win for the Gents in Cedar City, Utah during the 03-04 year. The two teams split their series last season, each winning the matchup at their home arena. Centenary took an 81-56 win over SUU, before the Gents traveled to Utah for a 78-69 loss.

SCOUTING UMKC
UMKC will open Summit League play at Oral Roberts on Thursday before meeting Centenary on Saturday. The Kangaroos were 3-2 before league play began with wins over Truman State, Lincoln Univ. and North Dakota. UMKC is averaging 68.2 ppg, while holding its opponents to just 57.2 ppg. Leading the way offensively is Jay Couisnard with 15.2 ppg. He is followed by La Treze Mushatt with 12.2 ppg and a team-high 7.0 rpg. Spencer Johnson is also contributing with a double figure average of 10.8 ppg.

SERIES VS UMKC
UMKC also leads the all-time series at 9-4 over Centenary since the 1987-88 season when the Gents won 88-75 on the road. The last meeting between these two teams came last season in league play, when they each won the game played on their home court. Centenary defeated the Kangaroos, 83-75 at home and UMKC edged the Gents 61-59 in Kansas City.

NEXT UP
Following Thursday's game against Southern Utah, the Gents will host UMKC on Saturday at 7:30 pm in the Gold Dome. Centenary will then travel to play Big 12 Oklahoma in Norman, Okla. on Dec. 9 with a 7:00 pm tip-off.
