Three Pointers Propel Gents to Road Win

LAFAYETTE, La.-The Centenary men's basketball team never trailed in a 73-68 victory over in-state rival, Louisiana-Lafayette, on Monday in non-conference action.

The Gents (5-7, 1-1 Summit) ended a five-game skid with the win, while the Ragin' Cajuns fell to 4-8 on the season. A 12-of-23 performance for 52 percent from the three-point range was the key as sophomore David Perez led Centenary with 22 points and freshman Daman Starring added 13.

Centenary used three-pointers from sophomores Maxx Nakwaasah and Perez to go up 6-2 in the early going. Though, two Gent fouls followed, allowing Louisiana-Lafayette to bring the score within two (6-4).

Senior Jerrald Bonham connected on five straight points to bring Centenary's lead back to five (11-6) before Perez and freshman David Swartz made it a 10-point game (24-14) on back-to-back treys midway through the first half.

Two more long balls by freshman Leo Davis and Swartz extended the Gents early lead to 35-21 with five minutes to play.

After the Ragin' Cajuns performed a dunk and hit one of two from the free throw line, but Starring and Davis continued the team's hot streak, knocking down two more long balls, while junior Roman Tubner's lay up finished off a strong 8-5 run to give the Gents a 45-31 halftime lead.

Despite a 15-minute rest, Centenary's Starring fired off a three to open up the final 20 minutes of play. A 6-0 run on three lay ups by Louisiana-Lafayette ended when Davis drained his third three of the night to make it a 51-38 game.

The Ragin' Cajuns brought the game within reach at 54-48 on an 8-3 tilt before Perez went on his own offensive surge, scoring nine straight points to go up by 13 (63-50) with 5:45 left to play.

Louisiana-Lafayette made the game interesting with a late 6-1 run to narrow the deficit to three (66-63) with 1:23 remaining. Freshman Pedro Maciel's lay up and three free throws by Perez and Maciel put the game out of reach.

Centenary out shot Louisiana-Lafayette 48 percent (23-of-48) to 41 percent (24-of-59) from the floor. The Gents also out performed the Ragin' Cajuns from deep, holding the home team to a low 11.1 percent (2-of-18).

Behind Perez and Starring was Davis with a career-high nine points on 3-of-4 from deep off the bench. Tubner and Maciel added eight and seven respectively, while Swartz had six.

Tyren Johnson led all scorers with 23 points and 13 rebounds for Louisiana-Lafayette, while teammate Randell Daigle chipped in with 11.

Centenary was out rebounded, 37-30 and allowed Louisiana-Lafayette to score 40 points to its 12 in the paint, but consistency throughout led the Gents to their second road win of the season.

Nakwaasah and Swartz led Centenary with five rebounds.

The Gents will return to Summit League play on Thursday as they travel to take on North Dakota State at 7:00 pm, followed by a 7:30 pm contest on Saturday against South Dakota State.
