Tuesday, December 29, 2009
OXFORD, Miss-Despite a double-double performance by junior Ashley Jackson, the Centenary women's basketball team had a tough outing at SEC Ole Miss, falling 87-38 on Tuesday in non-conference action.

The Ladies (1-12, 0-2 Summit) closed out the 2009 year, dropping its 12th contest of the season, while the Rebels improved to 9-4. Centenary was led by Jackson with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Ole Miss opened the game on a 13-2 run before senior Bethany Joseph would hit a three at the 13:40 mark. The Rebels would hold the Ladies to just one basket over the next four minutes to go up by 14 (19-5).

A 6-0 run on a jumper by freshman Donecia Cook and lay ups by sophomore Tesa Gould and junior Anne Farrell near the 8-minute mark by the Ladies allowed them to pull within 10 (24-14).

Though a consistent offensive performance by Ole Miss gave way to a 21-point first half lead with just two minutes to play. Despite a late jumper by Jackson, the Ladies gave up five straight points to finish the opening 20 minutes down, 45-21.

The second half was all Rebel basketball as the game quickly turned into a 30-point (51-21) tilt at 17:25. After two made free throws by Jackson, Ole Miss used a 14-0 run to extend its lead to 42 before Gould fired off a three with 11:38 remaining.

Midway through the half, the Rebels took advantage of several missed opportunities by Centenary to easily go ahead by 53 (85-32) with 2:30 to play. Freshman Megan Daniel scored the final four points in 38 seconds on two lay ups, but it was the 28 second-chance points on the day that helped propel Ole Miss to the win.

Centenary shot a low 27.1 (13-of-48) percent from the floor. Behind Jackson in scoring was Joseph with six points and Cook and Gould with five each.

Ole Miss was better at 40.5 (32-of-79) percent. Bianca Thomas led the Rebels with 23 points, while Nikki Byrd had a double-double of 19 points and 12 rebounds. Kayla Melson added 13 points, while Kayla Holloway chipped in with her own double-double of 10 points and 10 boards.

The Rebels performed well on the boards with 59 rebounds to the Ladies' 28 on the day.

Centenary will travel to the Dakotas to take on South Dakota State on Saturday at 5:00 pm and North Dakota State on Monday at 7:00 pm.
