SDSU Runs Past Ladies
Sunday, January 3, 2010
BROOKINGS, S.D.-Playing a very competitive South Dakota State team on the road, the Centenary women's basketball team couldn't overcome its large deficit, falling 82-35, on Saturday in Summit League play.

The Ladies (1-13, 0-3 Summit) allowed the Jackrabbits (7-6, 3-0 Summit) four lengthy runs on the night to drop their third straight league contest and first game of the 2010 year.

South Dakota State went up 8-0 before Centenary saw its first basket. Freshman Megan Daniel hit a three at 17:35 put the Ladies on board.

Two jumpers by freshman Jalena Sanders and junior Ashley Jackson followed by a three from senior Michaela Berg brought Centenary within four (14-10) with 15:30 to play.

The four-point deficit was the closest the Ladies would come all night as the Jackrabbits responded on a 20-0 run on four treys from deep, which allowed them to cruise to a 24-point lead (32-10) midway through the first half.

A five-minute span passed as senior Natasha Draganic's jumper ended South Dakota State's first offensive surge of the game. It didn't take long for the Jackrabbits to build up another run as the half ended in an 18-2 tilt for the home team, leaving Centenary down 53-16 at the half.

Five straight points by South Dakota State opened up the final 20 minutes of play. Junior Anne Farrell, Sanders and Jack hit consecutive lay ups for the Ladies' strongest attempt at trimming down the Jackrabbits large lead.

With 16:00 minutes remaining, Centenary trailed 58-22. Though, again, another run (9-0) by South Dakota State held the Ladies scoreless for nearly six minutes. Freshman Donecia Cook hit a jumper and a free throw to make it a 69-25 contest.

It was the offensive prowess by the Jackrabbits that was too dominant from beginning to end as they ended the night on an 8-3 run.

Centenary was held to 27.9 percent (12-of-43) from the floor. Berg led the Ladies in scoring with eight points, while Jackson added seven.

South Dakota State shot 55.4 percent (31-of-56) from the field and was scored 27 points off of 23 Centenary turnovers.

The Jackrabbits were led by Kristen Rotert with 15 points. She was followed by teammates Ashley Eide and Maria Boever with 12. Ketty Cornermann chipped in with 11.

South Dakota State out rebounded Centenary, 37-25.

Farrell led the Ladies with four boards. Jackson and Sanders pulled down three.

Boever had a game-high eight rebounds for the Jackrabbits.
