BROOKINGS, S.D.-The Centenary men's basketball team heads home after an 89-59 loss at South Dakota State on Saturday in Summit League action.

The Gents (5-9, 1-3 Summit) never led and struggled to trim the early lead by the Jackrabbits (7-8, 3-1 Summit). Junior Roman Tubner led all scorers with a game-high 22 points, while freshman Pedro Maciel added 11.

A 6-0 run by South Dakota State opened up the game. Maciel's jumper at 17:15 gave Centenary its first basket.

The Gents managed to pull within three (10-7) on a Maciel three and a Jerrald Bonham jumper, both assisted by sophomore David Perez.

The Jackrabbits' Kai Williams had five straight points to send South Dakota State up 15-7. Perez followed with a jumper to keep the game close. However, it was the offensive consistency by South Dakota State that propelled it to a large first-half lead.

The Jackrabbits drained four jumpers and two lay ups after the Gents fired off several unsuccessful three-pointers for a 12-0 run midway through the half.

Down 27-11, Centenary's Tubner drove the lane for two to end the mid-half threat. However, South Dakota State didn't stop their sharp shooting there, as the Jackrabbits drained three consecutive treys in less than 1:30 of play to go up 41-16.

It became a 29-pt game before freshman Jeron Trotman scored with 19 seconds to send the Gents into halftime, down 48-21.

South Dakota State continued to pour in the points, going on a quick 11-4 run. Tubner began to sink several baskets of his own, scoring nine straight points for Centenary. Though, during that time, the Jackrabbits stayed hot from the field, going up by as many as 37 (70-33) with 11 minutes to play.

After two made free throws by South Dakota State, Maciel and Tubner each drained treys. Centenary wasn't able to go on a run of its own due to the strong shooting performance by the Jackrabbits to close out the game.

Bonham had four final points and Maciel hit a three to pull within 30 (89-59) for the closest trim since the early going of the second half.

Centenary shot 38.5 percent (20-of-52) from the floor and 70 percent (14-of-20) from the free throw line.

Behind Tubner and Maciel was Bonham with nine points and Trotman with eight.

South Dakota State was impressive at 55.2 percent (32-of-58) from the floor and 91.3 percent (21-of-23) from the charity stripe.

The Jackrabbits were led by Dale Moss with 14 points, while Williams added 13. Clint Sargent and Anthony Cordova chipped in with 11 and 10 points respectively.

Centenary was out rebounded, 37-26. Trotman pulled down a career-high eight rebounds and had five blocks for the Gents, while Cordova had a game-best nine for South Dakota State.

The Gents will be back in action on Thursday when they host IPFW at 7:00 pm in the Gold Dome.
