Freestyles Dominate Tunica Meet

TUNICA, Miss.-Among a competitive field, the Centenary swimming teams performed well at Tunica as the Gents finished fourth with a total two-day score of 564.50 and the Ladies also placed fourth with a 536.50 score.

Both squads finished behind meet-best Missouri State in first, Delta State in second and Eastern Illinois in third. Following Centenary was Arkansas-Little Rock and rounding out the field was Rhodes College in fifth. 

The Ladies finished in the top three in seven events, led by top seeded freshman Laura Huning with a 53.96 time in the 100 yard freestyle. Huning also took home third place in the 50 yard freestyle with a final time of 25.22.

Senior Jessica Brown led the way for Centenary in the 100 yard butterfly with a second-place nod after a time of 59.23. Also in the top three for the Ladies was senior Maggie Vaughan in third in the 1000 yard free style (10:45.94) and classmate Leslie Wyatt, also in third in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:09.78).

The Ladies had two relay teams garner second place finishes including the 800 yard freestyle team of Huning, Cassie Cloutet, Haley Schneider and Lauren Kloepfer with a time of 8:03.12 and the 400 yard freestyle team of Kloepfer, Maddi Wyatt, Leslie Wyatt, and Huning with a 3:41.75 finish.

On the men's side, the Gents placed in the top three in six events. Sophomore Devin Ross won the 50 yard freestyle in 21.02 and placed second in the 100 yard butterfly (51.28), while teammate Peter Henry finished in third (52.18). Ross also was Centenary's top performer in the 100 yard freestyle, placing second with a time of 46.85.

Freshman Matthew Pittman rounded out the Gents individual top-three performances with a third place finish in the 1000 yard freestyle (9:52.04).

The relay team of Ross, Josh Scott, Caleb McSorley, and Henry won second in the 400 yard freestyle (3:14.29) and third in the 200 yard freestyle (1:26.70).

Centenary will be back in action on Saturday, January 23 when it travels to Trinity to take part in a 4:30 pm event start.
