Gymnastics Set to Host TWU in Season Opener
Friday, January 15, 2010
SHREVEPORT-The Centenary gymnastics team will open its season this Saturday when it host Texas Women's University at 7:00 pm in the Gold Dome. Doors will open at 6:00 pm.

This meet will also serve as "Girl Scout" Appreciation Night. All Girl Scouts wearing their shirt or sash will be admitted into the Gold Dome free of charge. Fans may also place cookies orders at the door as the Girl Scouts will be selling cookies throughout.

The Ladies will compete for the first time under new head coach Gretchen Goerlitz. This young and thriving squad consists of 11 returners and five newcomers. A team that finished 7-15 last season and fourth place in the Midwest Independent Conference will look to build on an already successful offseason.

"Our team chemistry has been amazing. We have bonded well and we feel like we know each other like a family," said Goerlitz.

Centenary will return seniors Whitney Daugherty, who finished last season with a season-high 9.875 on the floor for the Ladies and Courtney Hawkins, who notched season-bests on the vault (9.875) and the all-around (9.875).

Juniors Marisa Schneider and Alyssa Zawieja also recorded individual season-highs on the beam (9.850) and the bars (9.825) respectively. They will be joined by classmates Makensie Lant and Maille Vetros, along with Tara Sandoval and Laura Loy, who each missed last season due to injury.

Also competing for the Ladies this season are sophomores Stephanie Wright, Lauren Carlton, and Melody Smith along with freshmen Brittany Adams, Meg Crowley, Amanda Holt, Jessica Lieblich, and Christine Martinez.

"The upperclassmen are using their experience and the underclassmen are stepping up and that alone has proved to be a good balance for our team," said Goerlitz.

Centenary will face TWU for the first time this season as it plans on traveling there next week.

"We are excited to go out and compete. The Ladies have worked hard and we will enjoy showing fans what we love doing."

Following Saturday's meet, Centenary will travel to Denton, Texas to take on TWU on Saturday, January 23 at 7:00 pm.
