PREVIEW: Gents Tennis Set for Season Opener
Friday, January 22, 2010
SHREVEPORT-The Centenary men's tennis team will open its season at Tulane on Saturday, beginning at 12:00 pm.

Head Coach Todd Killen and team have worked hard through its preseason. The Gents return five from last season's squad and welcome three newcomers. Of the returners, Matt Shoptaugh led the way last season with a 3-2 record, while Jacob Dawson garnered a 3-11 mark and Evan Magil finished with a 2-16 record.

"Our preseason has gone pretty well so far.  For the men, we had a fall tournament against the best teams in the SEC.  It was an important tournament, especially for the freshmen.  It showed them what to expect from some of the top schools in the country.  I can't think of a better way to prepare these student-athletes than to play against the best players in the country," said Killen.

Despite playing in the same state, Centenary and Tulane have not met on the court since prior to the 2004-05 season.

"This Saturday the men are playing Tulane in New Orleans.  This match is an extremely special event.  It marks the first men's intercollegiate tennis competition since Hurricane Katrina in 2005 when they had to suspend eight sports.  So, we are looking forward to kicking off the rebuilding of their team," said Killen.

"Both our men and women have worked hard since the start of school.  If we can stay focused, outhustle, and outsmart our opponents, the results will take care of themselves.  We look forward to a great season.  Go Gents and Ladies!"
