Gents Tennis Drops Season Opener

NEW ORLEANS, La.-The Centenary men's tennis team dropped its season opener at Tulane, 7-0, on Saturday afternoon in New Orleans.

The Gents met the Green Wave for the first time since prior to Hurricane Katrina in 2005. This match marked Tulane's inaugural match since that devastating disaster.

In singles action, Matt Shoptaugh (6-1, 6-3) and Sam Grace (6-3, 7-6) gave Centenary its best attempt, though both fell in two straight sets as the No. 2 and 3 players respectively.

Evan Magill was defeated by Tulane's No. 1 player, Shaye Wali, 6-1, 6-0.  Jacob Dawson (6-1, 6-0) and Micah Threadgill (6-2, 6-0) also dropped their singles match and as Centenary's No. 5 and 6 players.

The combination of Magill and Shoptaugh in doubles action couldn't overcome Wali and Joe Young of Tulane in an 8-1 contest. Also in doubles action was Sam Grace and Threadgill (8-4) battling Trevor Getz and Kramer-Golnikoff. Dawson and Reeks (8-3) fell to Adam Bernstein and Rodrigo Rappaccioli, 8-3.

Centenary will be back in action on Saturday, February 6 at Arkansas-Pine Bluff at 11:00 am.
