Ladies Suffer Tough Loss on Road at SUU

CEDAR CITY, Utah-The Centenary women's basketball team had four players reach double-figures despite suffering a tough 74-64 road loss on Saturday evening in Summit League action.

The Ladies (2-26, 1-16) were led offensively by junior Ashley Jackson with 12 points. Seniors Leslie Forest and Bethany Joseph along with junior Anne Farrell each chipped in with 10 points.

Southern Utah took an early 6-2 lead at the 17-minute mark, but back-to-back lay ups by Forest evened the score at 6-6. Centenary then took its first lead (13-12) with 13:30 to play when freshman Vashni Sharp-Moore's lay up found the bottom of the basket for two.

Both teams continued to exchanged baskets for nearly two minutes until the Thunderbirds went up by nine (26-17) after a 10-2 run. Joseph drained a three, allowing the Ladies to pull within four (28-22) with six minutes left to play in the opening half.

Southern Utah, however, was able to keep a manageable distance, ending the first half on top by six, 34-28.

A quick lay up by the Thunderbirds was followed by four straight points from Jackson to make it a four-point game early in the second half.

Southern Utah kept their lead around eight for much of the final 20 minutes until a trey by senior Michaela Berg sank net to again, trim the deficit to four (51-47) midway through the half.

Three minutes passed without a bucket from either team until Southern Utah's Challis Pascucci hit consecutive jumpers to maintain the lead. While connecting on shots, Centenary saw the Thunderbirds take their largest lead of the night at 12 (65-53) with 3:12 left to play.

The Ladies wouldn't back down as they began chipping away after freshman Megan Daniel and Jackson hit free throws and Farrell had a jumper. Down by eight with under a minute to play, Centenary was forced to foul, allowing Southern Utah to connect and finish ahead by 10.

Centenary shot an impressive 49 percent (24-49), while Southern Utah finished at 47.7 percent (31-65).

Caitlyn Sears led all scorers with 24 points, while Pascucci had a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds.

The Ladies were out rebounded, 44-24 as Forest had nine boards to lead Centenary.

Centenary will play its final game of the 2009-10 season on the road at UMKC on Monday with a 7:00 pm tip-off time.
