Tuesday, March 2, 2010
SHREVEPORT-The Centenary baseball team will travel to play Northwestern State on Wednesday in a 6:30 pm, non-conference contest in Natchitoches, La.

The Gents improved to 4-3 after a four-game sweep over Grambling this past weekend. Centenary handled the Tigers in solid fashion after capping off the sweep in an extra inning contest in Game 4.

Recent Summit League Player of the Week, senior Cliff Shepard paces the Gents offensively with a .448 clip with a team-best 13 hits, three doubles and 10 RBI. Five players are hitting above .300 as senior Tell Ross (.346) has a team-best two home runs and a .731 slugging percentage, while juniors Alex Todd, Scott Pasket, and Keegan Acker hold a .333 average through the first seven games.

On the bump, right-handed starter Boone Whiting owns an impressive 1.42 ERA and a 1-0 record with 12.2 innings pitched. He has fanned 11, walked one and has given up just eight hits in two games. Also throwing well is junior David Benson with a 1.64 ERA and a 1-1 mark, while junior Justin Kraft with 1-1 with a 2.35 ERA. Senior Dakota Robinson and junior Derek Dalzell have both been strong out of the pen, holding 0.00 ERAs with a team-high four appearances.

Northwestern State and Centenary will meet for the first time this season. The two teams met twice last year as the Gents took a 3-2 win in Natchitoches, before dropping the second meeting, 10-6 at home later that season.

The Demons are riding a four-game streak with most recent wins over Louisiana-Monroe (12-4) and Creighton (8-7). NSU will play host to Grambling State on Tuesday prior to the matchup with Centenary.

Following the mid-week contest, Centenary will host Gonzaga in a three-game set beginning on Friday evening at 6:30 pm at Shehee Stadium.
