SHREVEPORT-It was an all-around solid day for the Centenary softball team as it took an 11-3 win over Grambling State on Thursday in non-conference action.

The Ladies (5-7) earned their fifth win of the season after connecting on an impressive 14 hits led by five players with multi-hit performances. Sophomore Katie Matthews swung the hot bat with a 3x4 effort, one run scored, while driving in three.

Also with two hits on the day were seniors Haley Bassett (2x4, 2R, RBI), Allison Shepperd (2x4, R, RBI), and sophomore Kalyn Harris (2x4, 2R, RBI).

Junior righty Sara Dornelas (6.0,4,3,1,0,6) picked up her fifth win of the season after tossing 6.0 complete innings, allowing just one earned run on four hits, while fanning six.

Classmate Lauren Highsmith (1.0, 0,0,0,0,0) threw 1.0 final inning of shutout ball.

Centenary opened the game with five runs in the first after five consecutive hits. Bassett and junior Bonnie Matak combined for back-to-back singles before Shepperd and Matthews each had an RBI-double, followed by an RBI-triple by Harris, her third of the season. Dornelas also plated a run with a base hit.

Grambling would respond in the top of the second with consecutive hits. The Tigers would hold the Ladies scoreless before trimming the early lead down to a two-run game (5-3) in the third on two hits and two Centenary errors.

Centenary wouldn't allow Grambling to come any closer as they scored in the next three frames. Freshman Kelsey Regan led off with a pinch-hit single and was driven in on a Bassett double before Matthews would connect on her second double base of the night to go up 7-3.

In the fifth, Cavarra and Dornelas picked up hits and plated runs, while freshman Callie Herrington walked and later scored for the Ladies third run of the inning.

Ahead 10-3, Centenary shut down Grambling in order before plating its final run of the game in the sixth.

Cavarra, Matak and Regan also had hits for the Ladies.

Centenary will return to action on Friday when it hosts North Texas in a double-header beginning at 5:00 pm.
