Gents Face Hot-Hitting Gonzaga in Game 2 for a 12-5 Loss

SHREVEPORT-A seven-run, fifth inning for Gonzaga propelled itself to a 12-5 victory over the Centenary baseball team on Saturday afternoon in non-conference play.

The Gents (5-5) put up six hits on the day, led by junior Cody Atkinson's (1x4, R, 3 RBI) three-run blast, while senior Cliff Shepard (1x4, 2 RBI) drove in two on a deep double to left center.

Also picking up hits for Centenary were juniors Keegan Acker (1x4), Alex Todd (1x3, 2R) and seniors Tell Ross (1x4, R) and Michael Tompkins (1x4, R).

Junior righty Justin Kraft (4.1,8,5,4,2,2) got the start and fell to 1-2 on the season with the loss after surrendering four earned runs on eight hits in 4.1 innings of work.

Gonzaga went up 1-0 on a solo shot to right field by lead off hitter, Drew Heid. It remained a one-run game until Centenary broke it open with Atkinson's bomb that put the Gents up 3-1 in the fourth.

Though, the lead didn't last long as the Bulldogs erupted on seven runs in the top of the fifth as they batted through the lineup, connecting on four hits, two walks and a hit by pitch.

Centenary wasn't able to find a consistent offensive groove as Gonzaga scored three more in the next two frames for an 11-3 advantage.

The Gents got some life back in the latter part of the eighth when Shepard doubled to left center, driving in Acker and Todd who had reached on singles to open the inning.

Down 11-5, the Bulldogs managed to plate one final run in the ninth on a SAC fly after allowing the first two runners to reach.

Also seeing action out of the pen for Centenary was junior Stephen Tromblee (1.1,5,5,5,2,0) who tossed 1.1 innings, allowing five runs on five hits, while senior Jimmy Hoyt (0.2,0,1,1,2,0) and Tompkins (2.2,2,1,1,1,0) combined for 3.1 innings, giving up two hits and two runs.

For Gonzaga, starter Ryan Carpenter (7.0,3,3,3,2,6) picked up the win after throwing 7.0 complete innings, allowing just three runs and three hits, while fanning six.

Andy Hunter led the Bulldogs at the plate with a 2x3 performance with two runs scored and three RBI.

Centenary will wrap up the three-game series with Gonzaga on Sunday at Noon.
