Ladies Split Games in League Opener

SHREVEPORT-The Centenary softball team opened Summit League play with a commanding 8-1 win over Oakland in Game 1 on Friday, but fell in Game 2, 8-1, to the Golden Grizzlies.

The Ladies (7-10, 1-1 Summit) were able to put together 13 hits in the opening game, but were shut down offensively in the second contest with only two knocks.

Game 1: Centenary 8, Oakland 1

Leading the way at the plate for Centenary were juniors Sara Dornelas with a 4x4 performance and two RBI, while Bonnie Matak finished 3x3, scoring two runs and driving  in one. Also with a multi-hit day was senior Allison Shepperd, going 3x4 with two runs scored.

Freshman Rachel Conard drove in a run on a pinch-hit solo homerun to left center, while junior Caitlin Cavarra (1x3, R) and senior Haley Bassett (1x2, 2 R) each had a hit.

After allowing Oakland to plate a run in the top of the first, Centenary would respond with two of its own in the bottom half on two hits and two walks. The Ladies would add to their lead with another run in the second and one in the fifth, before producing a breakout sixth inning, scoring four runs to go up 8-1.

With one out, Conard would belt her first home run of the season, followed by three consecutive singles from Bassett, Matak and Shepperd before Matthews, junior Kalyn Harris and Dornelas would pick up RBIs.

Dornelas (6.0,3,1,1,1,5) would earn the win and improve to 7-6 after tossing 6.0 complete innings, allowing one earned run on three hits with five strikeouts. Junior Lauren Highsmith (1.0,0,0,0,1,0) would throw the final inning in relief.

Oakland's Brittany Doyle (6.0,13,8,8,4,3) would suffer the loss, allowing eight runs on 13 hits over 6.0 innings of work.

Game 2: Oakland 8, Centenary 1

Centenary would find itself down 7-0 after six hits and an error before plating its first run in Game 2. Matthews would lead off the bottom of the second, belting her third home run of the season to put the Ladies on board.

However, Oakland pitcher Marisa Everitt (7.0,2,1,1,0,9) would hold Centenary at bay and two just two hits on the game, while striking out nine.

The Golden Grizzlies would go on to plate another run in the fourth, while the Ladies saw themselves down 8-1.

Matthews (1x3, R, RBI) and Bassett (1x3) would pick up Centenary's only hits on the game.

Dornelas (0.2,5,5,2,1,0) would start and be credited with the loss after tossing just 0.2 innings, allowing two earned runs on five hits.

She would later be relieved by sophomore Reggie Salvatore (1.1,2,2,2,2,2), junior Courtney Avery (2.0,3,1,1,4,0) and Highsmith (3.0,3,0,0,2,2).

Centenary will conclude the three-game series with Oakland in a 2:00 pm contest on Saturday.
