PREVIEW: Ladies Battle Bison in League Series

SHREVEPORT-The Centenary softball team will host North Dakota State this weekend in Summit League action. The Ladies and Bison will open on Friday with a double-header beginning at 4:00 pm, followed by a single game on Saturday at Noon.

The Ladies (8-11, 2-1 Summit) are coming off a hard-fought 4-3 loss to in-state rival, Louisiana-Monroe on Wednesday evening. In that game, senior Allison Shepperd belted three doubles and drove  in two crucial runs in the top of the seventh. Junior Sara Dornelas suffered the loss on the mound, falling to 7-8 on the season.

Centenary is led at the plate by Dornelas with a .380 clip. She is followed by senior teammate Haley Bassett with a .364 average and a team-best 20 hits and seven doubles. Sophomores Kalyn Harris and Katie Matthews each pace the Ladies with 12 RBI.

Dornelas owns a 3.62 ERA and a 7-8 record after throwing a team-high 75.1 innings. Junior Lauren Highsmith has seen action in 13 games and has a 1-0 record after tossing 20.2 innings of work.

North Dakota State, Summit League's 2009 Champions and Super Regional qualifiers enter Friday's contest after a very busy week down South. The Bison are 15-12 overall and 2-7 on the road after having dropped their last five of six away from home.

Melissa Chmielewski leads the way offensively with a solid .417 average, 40 RBI and five home runs, while Nicole Rivera posts a .393 clip and a team-leading 38 hits.  

Whitney Johnson has seen the majority of the innings on the mound with 121.0 innings pitched. Johnson holds a 10-8 record and a team-low 2.72 ERA with 127 strikeouts.

Centenary and North Dakota State will meet for just the eighth time as the Bison hold a 6-1 record over the Ladies.

Following this weekend's series, Centenary will return to action on Wednesday, March 24 when it hosts SFA at 5:30 pm.
