Ladies Battle Bison, Drop Double-Header
Saturday, March 20, 2010
SHREVEPORT-Facing the defending Summit League champions of North Dakota State, the Centenary softball team dropped both contests in Friday's double-header. The Ladies fell 7-2 in Game 1 and 4-2 in Game 2.

The Ladies (8-13, 2-4 Summit) battled a tough arm of Bison righty Whitney Johnson as they were only able to connect on five hits for the day led by junior Caitlin Cavarra who finished with a 2x5 effort and a run scored.

Game 1: NDSU 7, Centenary 2

North Dakota State jumped on Centenary early, posting three runs in the first inning on four hits, including a two-run double by Richel Briones.

Junior righty Courtney Avery (0.2,4,3,3,1,0) got the start, but suffered the loss after tossing 0.2 innings, allowing three runs on four hits. Sophomore right-hander Reggie Salvatore relieved Avery in the first and worked out of a jam, holding the Bison scoreless through the second.

The Ladies took advantage of a misplayed ball by the Bison after senior Haley Bassett led off the inning with a walk. Sophomore Kalyn Harris' sacrifice fly to centerfield scored Bassett, making it a 3-1 game.

Centenary would trim NDSU's lead to one (3-2) when Cavarra would lead off the third with a single. She was eventually placed at third and scored on a Bison passed ball.

It remained a one-run game until North Dakota State would plated four runs over the fourth and fifth frames to go up 7-2. Centenary wasn't able to adjust to the strong pitching performance by Johnson, being held hitless for the final five innings.

The Bison posted 13 hits, led by Elisa Victa's 3x3 performance.

Salvatore (6.1,9,4,4,4,2) pitched the final 6.1 innings, allowing four runs on nine hits for the no-decision.

Game 2: NDSU 4, Centenary 2

Centenary took a 1-0 lead in the home half of the second on a solo home run by sophomore Katie Matthews. However, North Dakota State would quickly respond with two runs of its own in the top of the third on a two-run shot by Melissa Chmielewski.

Junior Sara Dornelas (4.0,4,2,2,2,2) started and tossed the first 4.0 innings, allowing two runs on four hits, while fanning two and walking two before being relieved by classmate Lauren Highsmith.

Centenary and Highsmith were able to shut down North Dakota State in the fifth and sixth innings, as the Ladies picked up another run in the sixth to tie the game at 2-2. With one out, junior Bonnie Matak tripled down into the right field corner, while senior Allison Shepperd's single to shortstop drove in Matak.

The Bison proved too strong in the end as they opened the top of the seventh with a double, before being sacrificed to third. With one on, Centenary chose to intentionally walk the next two batters, but the Bison would score the first run on a passed ball and the second on a sacrifice fly.

Highsmith (3.0,5,2,2,2,2) took the loss, tossing the final 3.0 innings, allowing two runs on five hits.

Picking up hits for Centenary in Game 2 were Matak (1x3, R), Sheppered (1x3, RBI), Matthews (1x2, R, RBI), Dornelas (1x3), and Cavarra (1x2).

Centenary will wrap up the weekend series on Saturday at 11:00 am.
