Ladies Can't Snap Skid, Swept by IPFW
Saturday, March 27, 2010
FORT WAYNE, Ind.-Looking for its first win in 14 days, the Centenary softball team wasn't able to find an answer to IPFW's solid pitching staff, falling in both games on Saturday, 8-0 (6 innings) and 3-0, in Summit League play.

The Ladies (8-18, 2-7) posted just three hits over the two contests to extend its losing skid to eight games.

Game 1: IPFW 8, Centenary 0 (6 innings)

Junior Bonnie Matak (1x3) picked up Centenary's only hit in Game 1 as she singled in the top of the first inning, but was eventually out on a caught stealing.

IPFW went up 4-0 after the first two frames on five hits and a Ladies error.

Centenary's best chance to score came in the third when junior Sara Dornelas and freshman Kelsey Regan each reached on consecutive IPFW errors. However, Mastodon hurler, Courtney Cronin worked out of the jam to issue to strikeouts to end the innings.

IPFW would add to its lead with four more runs over the final three innings for an 8-0 lead.

Junior Lauren Highsmith (1.1,4,5,5,4,1) suffered the loss after tossing 1.1 innings, allowing five runs on four hits, falling to 1-2 on the season.

Sophomore Reggie Salvatore (4.1,7,3,3,5,0) pitched the final 4.1 innings of work, giving up three runs on seven hits.

IPFW's Cronin (6.0,1,0,0,2,7) earned the win after tossing another shutout on the weekend.

Game 2: IPFW 3, Centenary 0

Centenary managed to pick up only two hits in the final game of the series as Regan (1x3) and senior Allison Shepperd (1x3) each singled.

IPFW went ahead 1-0 in the bottom of the first after a lead off walk and two singles.

After allowing a single in the opening frame, Mastodon pitcher Rachel Staschuck would hold Centenary hitless until the seventh, allowing her team to add to its lead with two more runs for a 3-0 advantage and the series sweep.

Dornelas (4.1,5,3,3,4,4) picked up the loss after pitching the first 4.1 innings, allowing three runs on five hits with four strikeout and four walks. Salvatore (1.2,1,0,0,1,2) tossed the last 1.2 innings in relief of Dornelas.

Staschuck (7.0,2,0,0,2,8) garnered the win after tossing a 7.0 inning shutout with two hits and eight strikeouts for IPFW.

Centenary will return home for a mid-week contest against in-state rival, Louisiana Tech, on Wednesday at 6:00 pm.
