Ladies and T-Birds Split Friday Games

ST. GEORGE, Utah-The Centenary softball team snapped its nine-game skid with a 9-8 win over Southern Utah in Game 1, but fell 14-6 in five innings in Game 2 on Friday in Summit League action.

The Ladies fell to 9-20 on the season and 3-8 in league play after the double-header.

Game 1: Centenary 9, Southern Utah 8

Freshman Rachel Conard (2x3, R, 2 RBI) belted a solo shot and drove in two runs on two hits, while senior Allison Shepperd (2x3, R, 2 RBI) also had a multi-hit day to lead Centenary at the plate.

Junior Bonnie Matak (1x4, 2 R), sophomore Kalyn Harris (1x4, 2R, RBI), junior Sara Dornelas (1x4, R, RBI), freshmen Kelsey Regan (1x3) and Callie Herrington (1x4, R) and senior Beth Krysiak (1x1, R, RBI) also had a hit for the Ladies.

Dornelas (4.2,6,5,4,3,2) earned the win for Centenary after tossing 4.2 innings of work, allowing four earned runs on six this with two strikeouts.

Sophomore Reggie Salvatore (1.0,0,0,0,0,0) earned her first save of the season pitching 1.0 inning of scoreless ball, while junior Lauren Highsmith (1.1,4,3,3,0,0) tossed 1.1 innings of relief, giving up three runs on four hits.

Centenary saw itself down 2-0 after the first, but would bounce back and plate a run in the top of the second when Conard would belt a solo shot centerfield.

It remained a 2-1 game until the Ladies pounded out five hits, including three doubles by Shepperd, Harris, and Krysiak, while also taking advantage of two Southern Utah errors for four runs to go ahead 6-1.

The T-Birds would add a run in the home half, but the Ladies would again respond with another in the top of the fifth on a RBI-single by Dornelas.

Southern Utah would then make it a 7-5 game with two runs in the fifth, but Shepperd would drive in two, while reaching on an error to challenge Southern Utah with a 9-5 lead.

The T-Birds would make the game interesting with three more runs over the final two frames including a two-run home run by Aly Daniels in the bottom of the seventh, but Salvatore was able to get the final three outs in order to close out the game.

Game 2: Southern Utah 14, Centenary 6 (5 innings)

Conard belted her second home run of the day to lead Centenary at the plate with a 2x3, one run, one RBI performance in Game 2. Freshman Bailey Boggs finished 2x2, while junior Caitlin Cavarra (1x3, R, RBI), Dornelas (1x3, 2 RBI), and Herrington (1x3, R, RBI) each picked up a hit.

Salvatore (3.0,8,6,6,2,3) suffered the loss for the Ladies, falling to 0-2 on the season. The righty tossed 3.0 innings, allowing six runs on eight hits.

Centenary used four walks and a two-run single by Dornelas to go ahead 3-0 in the top of the first. However, Southern Utah would use back-to-back hits to pull within one in the latter half.

The Thunderbirds would use 11 hits over the third and fourth frames to go ahead 14-3. Centenary would look to find a way to keep the game going with three runs in the top of the fifth when Conard led off with a home run. Herrington and Cavarra would pick up an RBI, but the Ladies chances were cut short in five innings.

Also seeing action on the mound for Centenary was juniors Courtney Avery (0.1,2,5,5,3,0) and Highsmith (0.2,3,3,3,1,0).

Centenary will wrap up the weekend series at 1:00 pm CT on Saturday in St. George, Utah.
