Saturday, April 3, 2010
SHREVEPORT-The Centenary baseball team took an early lead and never looked back as it defeated UT-Pan American, 9-3, on Saturday afternoon in non-conference action.

The Gents (10-12) had another strong pitching performance as junior Justin Kraft (7.1,8,3,3,1,3) tossed 7.1 innings, allowing three runs on eight scattered hits with three strikeouts for the win, improving him to 2-3 on the season.

Centenary connected on eight hits as freshman Ryan Bell led the way with a 2x4 effort, one run scored and one RBI, while junior Keegan Acker (2x5, R) also had two hits on the day.

Also picking up a hit were junior Alex Todd (1x3, 3 RBI) who drove in three runs, senior Cliff Shepard (1x3, R), junior Scott Pasket (1x3, 2 R, RBI), and freshman Trey McGee (1x4, 2 R). Senior Tell Ross and sophomore Jeff Schaffert each drove in a run on a sacrifice fly.

Centenary took an early 2-0 lead in the first when Todd singled to left center, driving in Acker who reached on a single and Ross who walked.

UT-Pan American would respond with a run in the second and third frames to tie the game at 2-2 on three hits. The Gents took advantage of a lead off walk and a Broncs error to plate two more runs in the home half of the fourth to regain the lead.

Ahead 4-2, Kraft continued to shut down UT-Pan American's attempt to take a lead, giving Centenary the chance to produce a strong sixth inning by scoring four runs.

Shepard and Pasket hit back-to-back doubles to lead off the inning, before Schaffert would reach on an error for an RBI. Bell would then send a double to left field for the Gents third run before Ross would sacrifice himself for the ninth run.

UT-Pan American would plate a run in the eighth on two hits, but junior Stephen Tromblee, who replaced Kraft out of the pen, would work out of the jam, leaving two runners on base.

Tromblee (1.2,1,0,0,2,1) allowed no runs on one hit in the final 1.2 innings in relief.

Broncs' starter Kyle Kotchie (5.0,4,5,4,4,5) took the loss, tossing 5.0 complete innings, allowing four earned runs on four hits.

Bryant Elliot was 3x4 with two RBI on the day for UT-Pan American.

Centenary will wrap up the weekend series on Sunday with a single game beginning at Noon.
