PREVIEW: Gents Open League Play at Southern Utah

SHREVEPORT-The Centenary baseball team will open league play this weekend at Southern Utah as the Gents are set to play the Thunderbirds in two scheduled double-headers beginning on Friday.

Games times are set 1:00 pm CT and immediately following on both Friday and Saturday in Cedar City, Utah.

Centenary enters league play with a 10-13 overall record and are looking for its first road win of the season as the Gents are 0-7 away from Shehee Stadium and 1-1 in neutral play.

Senior Cliff Shepard leads Centenary offensively with a .353 clip and a team-best 30 hits and 21 RBI. Junior Keegan Acker follows with a .346 average and a team-leading 16 walks after sitting several games due to an early-season injury.

Of late, freshman Trey McGee has stepped in and played well, posting a .306 average and has scored 12 runs.

As a team, Centenary is hitting .261 on the season through 23 games.

On the bump for the Gents this weekend will be Boone Whiting with a team-low 2.71 ERA and a 2-1 record through 36.2 innings. The righty has fanned 50 batters and given up 26 hits in six game starts.

Also projected to see action on the mound against Southern Utah will be righty Justin Kraft with a 4.72 ERA and a 2-3 record. In 34.1 innings, Kraft has struck out 25 batters and allowed 44 hits.

Junior David Benson owns a 5.40 ERA and a 2-2 record with seven game appearances. The righty has tossed 35.0 innings and fanned 25 batters and allowed 40 hits, while sophomore Seth Lugo has tossed 7.1 innings, earned two saves with a 0-1 record and a 9.82 ERA.

Centenary and Southern Utah met last season three times as the Thunderbirds took all three games from the Gents at Shehee Stadium.

Southern Utah enters the weekend series with a 6-19 record and a 1-6 nod at home.

Joe Goldenberg leads the team with a .439 average, while Taylor Shaw posts a .319.

Expected to throw for the Thunderbirds is RHP Kyle Melling (10.96 ERA, 1-2), RHP Kyle Hamman (8.10 ERA, 0-5), LHP Justin Neubauer (4.38 ERA, 1-2), and LHP Cody Eliason (11.88 ERA, 1-5).

Following the weekend series, Centenary will return home to host North Dakota State beginning on Friday at 6:00 pm.
