Gents Win Marathon, Fall in Game 2

ROCHESTER, Mich.-The Centenary baseball team rallied to win Game 1, 8-5 in 14 innings, but fell in Game 2, 10-5 to Oakland on Saturday afternoon, snapping its nine-game win streak in league play.

The Gents now hold a 19-16 overall record and a 9-2 league record after the two games.

Game 1: Centenary 8, Oakland 5 (14 innings)

Centenary pounded out 16 hits over 14 innings to secure its ninth straight league win of the season.

Juniors Scott Pasket (3x6), Alex Todd (3x7, 3 R), and senior Jeff Ericson (3x6, 2 R, RBI) each garnered three hits for the Gents, while seniors Cliff Shepard (2x5), Michael Tompkins (2x6, R) added two knocks. Juniors Keegan Acker (1x7, RBI), sophomore David Perez (1x6, R), and freshman Trey McGee (1x5, 3 RBI) contributed with a hit.

Junior Stephen Tromblee (1.1,1,0,0,0,0) tossed the final 1.1 innings in relief to garner his second win of the season, improving to 2-2. The lefty gave up just one hit in the outing.

Starter David Benson (7.0,6,4,2,2,3) pitched 7.0 complete innings, allowing two earned runs on six hits, while fanning three. Senior Dakota Robinson (2.2,2,1,1,2,5) struck out five in 2.2 innings of work while giving up one run on two hits and junior Derek Dalzell (3.0,3,0,0,1,2) threw 3.0 scoreless innings in relief.

After falling down 4-3, Centenary scored two runs in the sixth to take a lead on four hits, including an RBI-sacrifice bunt from McGee and an RBI-single from Acker.

Oakland would go on to tie the game at 5-5 in the eighth, sending the contest into extra frames. Strong relief pitching for the Gents held the Golden Grizzlies scoreless as they were able to plate three runs in the top of the 14th. Pasket, Todd, and Ericson each singled and Shepard doubled to accompany a walk from Tompkins to take the late-game advantage.

Game 2: Oakland 10, Centenary 5

Oakland snapped Centenary's impressive streak among league opponents in Game 2 when it produced two strong innings of play over the Gents.

Dalzell (2x3, 2 RBI) and Acker (2x4, 2 R) each led with two hits, while Shepard (1x2, R, RBI), Pasket (1x4), Tompkins (1x4, R, RBI), Todd (1x4, R) and freshman Ryan Bell (1x3) had a hit.

Junior starter Justin Kraft (2.2,8,9,5,1,3) tossed 2.2 innings, allowing five earned runs on eight hits with three strikeouts, but suffered the loss, falling to 3-4 on the season.

Sophomore Seth Lugo (3.1,3,1,1,2,3) pitched the final 3.1 innings in relief, surrendering one runs on three hits.

Centenary took a 1-0 lead in the first when Shepard's double down the right field line plated Acker who led off the inning with a bunt single.

However, the Gents allowed two large innings by Oakland in the second and third as it scored nine over two frames.

A four-run third by Centenary made it a 9-5 game as the Gents connected on four hits, including a two-run triple by Dalzell.

Oakland would add an insurance run in the fifth to hold onto its early lead for the win.

Centenary will wrap up the weekend series on Sunday with a single game beginning at Noon CT.
