PREVIEW: Gents Face NSU in I-49 Showdown

SHREVEPORT-The Centenary baseball team will host in-state, I-49 rival, Northwestern State on Tuesday at 6:30 pm at Shehee Stadium in non-conference action.

The Gents enter the game with an overall record of 19-16 and a 13-6 mark on their home field.

Centenary returns home after a three-game series with Summit League foe, Oakland where it took two of three from the Golden Grizzlies before the final game was cancelled due to rain.

Offensively, the Gents are hitting .264 as a team and are led by senior Cliff Shepard's .361 clip and team-leading 48 hits, 29 RBI and 15 doubles. Junior Keegan Acker is batting .323 with a squad-best 23 walks, while classmate Alex Todd owns a .317 average and is second-best with 39 knocks.

Starter Boone Whiting continues to pace the pitching staff with a 4-1 record and a 2.61 ERA. The junior has tossed 58.2 innings, allowing 45 hits, 17 earned runs, while fanning 80.

Out of the pen, junior Derek Dalzell (1-2, 3.55 ERA), senior Dakota Robinson (2-1, 3.86 ERA) and junior Stephen Tromblee (2-2, 5 SV, 5.40 ERA) have contributed well of late, lowering the team's ERA to 4.90.

Northwestern State will meet Centenary with a 26-14 overall record and a 9-9 clip on the road. The Demons are hitting .321 as a team, led by Eric DeBlanc's .384 average. Oscar Garcia follows with a .383, while Tyler Baisley is hitting .354.

On the mound, Luke Irvine is 4-4 with a team-low 2.55 ERA. Ryan Zimmerman is 4-3 with a 3.20 ERA and expected to start against Centenary is Brett Fredieu with a 2-0 record and a 4.29 ERA.

Centenary and Northwestern State met earlier this season on March 3 when the Demons took an 11-2 win over the Gents. Junior Scott Pasket had two hits for Centenary, while senior Cliff Shepard belted a solo home run.

Following the Tuesday contest, the Gents will travel to South Dakota State in a critical league series beginning on Friday at 3:00 pm.
